Adding Texture - Once you have mastered making a nice sheet of paper you are ready to add your own special touches to make it more interesting. Once way to do this is to vary the texture. This can be done by making an all over pattern on your paper by placing any piece of fabric on the wet paper before sponging and then pressing it into the paper when you sponge.

You can turn a wet piece of paper, before sponging, onto an old board’s surface, couch it there and let it dry. It will have the grain of the board embossed onto it. Our paper casting mold release spray will help the embossed image release from the surface.

(It is not absolutely necessary, but it makes it easier.) Other textures to try: tiles, baskets, place mats, cedar shake shingle, a brick wall, the bark of a tree, a leaf, a metal embossing plate, lace, a stone, stamps, bowls……..let your imagination run wild!

Texturing and embossing are very similar, embossing might be referred to as more interesting texturing.

Make your sheet of paper using the basic technique, before you lay on the gray cover screen and start to sponge water from the surface lay the item that you would like to emboss. Now slip out your support grid, otherwise you will emboss it’s texture on the back of your piece of paper. Now sponge, couch and iron or press as you usually do.

I think that the big wood press works much better in this process. If you don’t have a press try using heavy books.
