Basic
Papermaking Techniques
Turn hardwood deckle over and
undo the straps, then place papermaking screen, (thin white
screen) and then the support grid (waffle like white grid)
and tighten straps very tightly. Next dip the mold into your
tub of water at a slight angle so there are no bubbles under
your papermaking screen.
There should be enough water
that your wooden mold slightly floats in the water. Now Tear
It Up! You can use either the dry papermaking pulps, your
own recycled paper or mix them both. Use slightly more than
the sheet of paper that you want to create (more for a
thicker sheet). Beat paper and water with hand beater or
blender. The longer you beat, the finer your fibers and the
smoother your piece of paper will be. Less beating creates a
coarser texture. Experiment with everything. Pour your
beaten mixture (pulp) into the hardwood deckle. Suspend the
pulp evenly in the water. To do this, wiggle your fingers in
it. You may want to pull out any large clumps.
Lift the mold out of the
water and let it drain, see if you like the sheet. If there
is a hole or it is thin you may want to set the whole thing
back into the water and re-wiggle your fingers in it. Undo
the closures and carefully lift up the hardwood deckle and
remove. Hold by the white support grid so as not to let any
pulp slip off the papermaking screen. Remove the support
grid. Place the gray cover screen over paper and sponge to
press out water. Remove the cover screen and replace with a
couch sheet; press with your hands. Turn it over and replace
the papermaking screen on the back with a couch sheet and
press again. It may take more than one couch sheet. Your
sheet of paper, although wet is finished. Place in a press
to dry. Next time you can try: deckles, additives, glitter,
herbs or flowers.
Have fun and EXPERIMENT!!!
